Castello di Spessa, Friuli
Still showing a limpid dark ruby robe and pink rather than garnet rim with plenty of creamy vanilla and black cherry, kirsch fruit on the palate. Only the nose, a little dusty at first but opening to reveal complex spicy (paprika, caraway, mocha) and herbal (rosemary and thyme) aromas, betrays the wine's development. I can see this wine giving pleasure for another 5-8 years at least.
The Castello di Spessa estate
This (now American-owned) Estate, famous for being Giacomo Casanova's Italian produces wines which are among the most richly hedonistic, and immediately seductive of the Collio region.
