Rocca di Frassinello, Tuscany
Despite being the first vintage of Le Grand Vin, oenologists Christian Le Sommer and Alessandro Cellai were prepared to stake their reputations offering it on the market as they both thought it worthy of release. The percentage of Sangiovese moves up to 60%, with 25% Cabernet and the rest Merlot. 100% new oak gives added structure to this inky, dry, rich and minerally wine.
The Rocca di Frassinello estate
A recent joint venture in the Maremma between the Castellare Estate (above) and Domaines Barons de Rothschild which is aready bearing fruit. Situated between Bolgheri (the seat of the Super-Tuscan revolution) and Scansano, the region benefits from a similarly warm climate but has soils more akin to Montalcino. The Estate utilises the Rothschild expertise with French varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in particular, and the team at Castellare's knowledge of the region and facility cultivating top quality Sangioveto to create their own Super-Tuscan range. These are early days for this estate but it is already making waves with its first vintages...
