Tenuta San Leonardo, Trentino - Alto Adige
This superb Merlot-based cuvee from the historic San Leonardo Estate in Trentino leaves many big-name and bigger-price Pomerols in the shade. An intensely inky, ruby colour, and a broad nose of tobacco, vanilla and cocoa wrestling with a weight of ripe damsons and plums. The palate shows a good balance of concentrated dark fruits, herbaceous notes and long velvety tannins, with hints of white pepper and cardamom on the finish all at a refreshingly elegant 13% ABV. A must for lovers of sophisticated Bordeaux blends.
The Tenuta San Leonardo estate
Seen as the Sassicaia of the North (and not just because its owner was a consultant oenologist for Marchese Mario Incisa back in the 1960s) this Estate's outstanding Bordeaux blend has received 'Tre Bicchiere' from Gambero Rosso in ten out of of the last twelve vintages and was also numbered among the Guide's 'Fifty Wines which changed Italy'. The wines are more akin to Bordeaux than Bolgheri with their balance and purity and (says Nicclas Belfrage) 'can have an elegance-cum-depth capable of taking on the best clarets of the world'. The Estate is consistently voted the top winery in the region and one of the nine most consistent in the whole of Italy, AND YET its wines remain extremely well-priced by comparison to more widely publicised names.
